Future and New Cape Fear Band Members
Dear 8th grade band parents,
Hello! My name is Matt Jorgensen, and I am the Director of Bands at Cape Fear High School. We want to extend a welcome to you and your 8th grader to the band program at Cape Fear High School.
As you plan your high school curriculum, I hope that your
conversations include discussions about continuing music education through band. The 8th grade band students have grown so much since their first experiences as sixth graders and they will contribute greatly to the Cape Fear Band program.
Please email matthewjorgensen@ccs.k12.nc.us to be added to the list for future mailings.
Course Registration
The band courses that freshmen should sign up for are as follows:
Semester 1: "Instrumental Music: Band Intermediate"
*A student can register for "Instrumental Music: Proficient (Honors) if they audition for All County & All District Band. If students register for this section and then do not meet the requirements, they will be placed into the Intermediate (non-honors) section.
AND
Semester 2: "Instrumental Music: Band Intermediate"
*A student can register for "Instrumental Music: Proficient (Honors) if they auditioned for All County & All District Band the previous semester. If students register for this section and then do not meet the requirements, they will be placed into the Intermediate (non-honors) section.

This is the course name for Band at CFHS. Although students are not really “intermediate” since they played their instrument in band through middle school, this is the correct course name for the first level of high school band. Some students may be invited to audition for the advanced ensemble. This will be initiated by the director.

Core Values and Overview of the CFHS Band Program
Performance: We pursue excellence in every rehearsal and performance by committing to preparation, teamwork, and pride in our craft. We believe great performances reflect strong work ethic, attention to detail, and respect for the ensemble.

Education: We value continuous musical growth through skill development, musical literacy, and critical thinking. Our program exists not only to perform, but to teach students how to learn, improve, and appreciate music for life.

Leadership: We cultivate leadership by encouraging responsibility, accountability, and positive influence among all members. Every student has the opportunity to lead through example, effort, and integrity.

Service: We serve our school and community by representing our program with professionalism and spirit. Through outreach, performances, and support of others, we use music as a way to give back and build connections.

Cape Fear High School Band Programs educate young people through music performance. Students in the CFHS Band Program learn confidence, teamwork, coordination, and leadership, just to name a few. Our students accomplish a lot! Our Wind Ensemble will consistently challenge students to reach new heights. Our Marching Band performs at local and regional competitions as well as football games and local parades. We also have Winter Guard, Indoor Percussion, and Winter Winds, which meet after school.
“The rewards stemming from high school band programs include: teamwork skills, self-discipline, healthy self-esteem, personal confidence, learning to reach short and long term goals. Being a musician maps the human mind for success; success in all avenues of life.” (Teaching Music Through Performance in Band, by Tim Lautzenheiser)
“College admissions officers continue to cite participation in music as an important factor in making admissions decisions. They claim that music participation demonstrates time management, creativity, expression, and open-mindedness.” (Carl Hartman, Arts May Improve Students’ Grades, The Associated Press, October 1999)

The Cape Fear Marching Band is a co-curricular activity at Cape Fear High School. This means that students are signed up for a band class in the Fall semester and participate in the proogram after school. Practices, games, competitions, and parades are all graded performances.

Auditions are in May for certain groups like percussion and guard. There are no auditions for wind players. Our rehearsals start in June with our first band camp.

The marching band performs through the fall semester at every football game and a 4-5 competitions.
