MEET THE CFHS BAND STAFF
Matthew Jorgensen, Director

Mr. Matthew Jorgensen is a North Carolina native, raised in the small town of Wagram, NC in Scotland County, and is proudly serving as the current Director of Bands at Cape Fear High School, in Fayetteville, NC. While band literature has always been a love and passion, it was the life lessons that were instilled from his band director that really were a driving force for him to want to become an educator and extend those same opportunities and guidance to students.
Matthew is in his 16th year of teaching for and has been with three different programs (North Lenoir High School (1), South View High School(5 1⁄2), Scotland High School (7 1⁄2)). The band programs under his direction have been awarded numerous superior ratings at marching band competitions and superior ratings at the SEDBA MPA in grades 3, 4, 5, and 6. Matt has also taken bands to perform in the Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Macy’s Holiday Parade in Universal Studios, the 2012 Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando, FL, as well as Music in the Parks Festivals in Charlotte, NC and Tom’s River, NJ. Matt has been named a “Best High School Band Director” in the 2015 Fayetteville Observer’s Readers Choice Awards and has also been named Q98’s “Teacher of the Week” in July of 2015. He was nominated and selected by his peers to conduct the 9-10 All-District Band for the Southeastern District of NC.
While the Director of Bands at Scotland High School, he had maintained the traditions of the program by overseeing the Concert and Symphonic Bands, the “Plaid Notes” Jazz Ensemble, the Marching Band, and the Winterguard programs. The Scotland High School Symphonic Band played under his direction at the NCDPI Education Building in Raleigh for the state superintendent. The “Plaid Notes” Jazz Ensemble has played at the North Carolina Superintendents Convention. The Marching Band continued to perform at competitions throughout North Carolina and performed at the Fayetteville Veterans Day Parade for the first time ever in 2022. Matt has a strong belief in collaboration of the arts groups and twice shared
the field for the National Anthem at football games with rival Richmond Senior HS and Terry Sanford High School.
He holds a BM in Music Education from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, where he was a trumpet major and Dr. Timothy Altman. Matt is a member of NAfME, the NC Southeastern District Bandmasters Association (where he is currently their webmaster), Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and was a NC Teaching Fellow.

Matt's main goal as the current Director of Bands at Cape Fear High School is to maintain and continue the standard of superior performances and honoring the history of the program. In the 2023-2024 school year, the marching band went undefeated in their class all season competing at Clinton HS, Gray's Creek HS, NW Guilford HS, and Midway HS. The group won 1A/2A/3A Grand Champion at Gray's Creek and Overall Grand Champion at Midway HS. The group also returned to BOA Performance at the BOA Regional in Conway, SC for first time since COVID. The Wind Ensemble also received a "Superior" rating in Grade 5 at the SEDBA MPA Festival. Matt helped form the Cumberland County Combined Percussion Ensemble which competed in the AIA Circuit. This group was compiled of students from Cape Fear, Gray's Creek, and Terry Sanford. In their first year, they received a Silver Medal at AIA South Finals. Under his direction, the JV Guard Program was brought back and the Varsity Guard has returned to performing at WGI events.
Currently, Matt lives in Fayetteville, NC and is engaged to his fiancé', Chasity. He will have three step-daughters, Lennon, Maggie, and Josie. Together Matthew and Chasity also have their cat (Aria) and dog (Lucy).
